PVC cards, broadly known as plastic or ID cards, require printers other than the traditional consumer-grade ink jet or laser printers, because of their smooth surface and the fact that the ink must be adhered to the surface of the card through a process known as dye-sublimation.
The printer featured in the above demo is the Evolis Dualys 3.
The Evolis Pebble4 and Tattoo2 work exactly the same way as shown above,
with the exception of the card turn-over mechanism as they will only print on one side of the card per pass.
Dye-Sublimation process
Card printers apply a colored layer from a ribbon onto the flat, plastic surface. This transfer is performed by a thermal print head that increases the temperature of the ribbon’s color layer. This layer turns into gas and reverts to its solid state on the superficial layer of the plastic card.
This process, called dye sublimation, makes it possible to optimize the quality of printed images and logos with a 300 DPI resolution that guarantees expert presentation.
Evolis printers offer professional printing with the superimposition of the 3 primary colors (yellow, magenta and cyan) to add more depth and crispness to an image.
Finally, cards are protected thanks to the application of a layer of varnish.
Data Encoding
Evolis printers personalize plastic cards for a wide spectrum of applications. When required, encoding (contact and contactless smart cards, magnetic stripes) is performed before printing.
Contact smart card encoding requires a special smart card encoding adapter (SCAdapater) for the Evolis printers which ASG has manufactured exclusively for our customers use. The printer has a "contact station" on it which transfers the encoding information from the SCAdapter through a DB9 interface on the printer directly to the card. This option is an additional $99.95 and is available exclusively through Artemis Solutions Group.
Magnetic stripe encoding, both lo-co (low coercivity - 300Oe) or hi-co (high coercivity - 2750Oe) is immediately available through your software on any printer purchased with a mag-encoder option.
Contactless (RFID) smart card encoding requires a special RFID smart card encoding adapter (RFIDAdapter) for the Evolis which is included with the printer when purchased with a contactless smart card option.
