Printer Selection Criterion:
Selecting the right printer for the job can be a daunting task with all of the options and features available.
ASG Global provides this tool and the following advice on how to select the right printer for the job:
Single (Simplex) vs. Dual Sided (Duplex) Printing:
This is one of the most often misunderstood parts of selecting a printer. If you need to print on both sides of the card, most companies will try to sell you a dual sided printer. The fact of the matter is that you may NOT need a dual sided printer and by purchasing a single sided printer and using it for double-duty you can save substantial money and time during card distribution. The question you have to ask yourself is: "Will one of the sides of the card be the same on every card issued?" If the answer is yes, buy a single sided printer (such as the Pebble4) and start saving money and time.
Here is how it works... Let's say for instance that the back of all of your cards is going to be the same on every single card in black ink. You can pre-print the backs of the card using a single color K panel ribbon for about a penny a peice and at a speed of 1000 cards per hour. You can then turn the cards over and use them as blank stock to print the YMCKO part of the card at the point of distribution for about 28 cents each and at a speed of 150 cards per hour. Your total price is 29 cents per card (plus the cost of the card) and your speed at the point of distribution is about 24 seconds per card. Doing the same job on the Dualys3 using the six panel ribbon YMCKOK to print the front in color and the back in black costs 32 cents per card (plus the cost of the card) and your speed at the point of distribution is almost 30 seconds per card (125 cards per hour).
Over a run of hundreds or thousands of cards, this time and money savings can add up - not to mention the $1000 or so you saved on the difference in the printer cost.
Printing Backgrounds:
When selecting this option, please remember that you can order your cards pre-printed with a background image and then print on them using the YMCKO ribbon at the point of distribution. In large volumes (5000 or more), this option saves a dramatic amount of cost. Contact your ASG sales representative for more information about our pre-printing services.
Secure Badges with Holograms:
Remember that Holographic Secure Overlays can be added using a single sided non-holographic printer when you are printing large runs of cards, such as the example of simplex vs. duplex shown above. If you are printing ad-hoc cards at the point of distribution and need a holographic overlay for security, then the best option is the Securion Printer. You can also purchase cards with an embedded holographic image already on the card. Contact your ASG sales representative for more information about our embedded holographic cards.
